Ever wonder what happens to the waste deposited in bed pans in a hospital? At Eagle Ridge, we use the Vernacare macerator system which allows a nurse to place a pulp liner in the bedpan and dispose of the biodegradable pulp liner and waste material in the macerator.
The Vernacare system is unique from other macerators because it is completely hands off for the nurse. A foot pedal allows the lid lock to release and a sprung hinge opens the lid. A nurse simplyly places the liner and contents in the machine and, using cold water to save energy, the materials are ground into tiny, biodegradable fragments that get flushed down the drain in the waste water.
The macerator is a great tool in the fight to control bacteria and infection in the hospital. Nurses are not required to handle dirty bedpans beyond placing them in the macerator. The foot activated lid release allows them to avoid setting the dirty pans down in order to open the lid. At the end of the cycle, the chamber is cleaned with a deodorized anti-bacterial solution that helps control both bacteria and odour.
