Long term bed confinement can lead to a number of medical issues including the formation of pressure ulcers more commonly known as bed sores. The prevention and management of pressure ulcers presents a medical issue for the bedridden patient. Eagle Ridge Hospital houses long term patients at Eagle Ridge Manor and within the extended care ward of the hospital itself.
A skin or pressure sore develops when the blood supply to an area of the body stops and the skin in that area dies. A person who is bedridden or always in a wheelchair puts pressure on the same areas much of the time. These areas are made worse when the patient rubs against his or her sheets or is roughly pulled up in the bed or chair.
Bedsores can be serious, depending on how much of the skin and tissues have been damaged. Because the broken skin of a bedsore is a prime target for bacteria, bedsores are extremely vulnerable to infections. This is especially true if the sore is frequently contaminated by the urine or feces of a patient who has incontinence.
Pressure sores that become infected heal more slowly and can spread a dangerous infection (septicemia) to the rest of the body. If left untreated, gangrene could develop, which could be life threatening.
The KCI RIK Fluid Mattress, with unique Microflow™ fluid and a patented Anti-Shear™ layer, helps ensure pressure redistribution, while reducing patient friction and shear.
