Location – Occupational Therapy Department
The use to which a power wheel chair is made is fairly obvious. It makes mobility possible for patients who are unable to get around under their own power or who cannot manoeuvre a manual wheel chair.
The particular chair we require in OT has a mid-wheel drive for excellent mobility, a seat that adjusts for width and depth and adjustable rehab seating. The seat will accept specially designed cushions that can be placed in a variety of configurations to accommodate various physical circumstances.
The chair will negotiate thresholds and rises up to 2 inches and navigates over rough terrain. However, at 4 mph, it would be a poor choice for entering a NASCAR race.
Most of the patients who will use the chair to attend therapy sessions throughout the hospital have been debilitated by stroke. A power chair assures they do not experience a reduction of function on the affected side of the body.
The chair will also benefit patients with complicated medical conditions like double amputations and a recent patient who presented as a double amputee has also lost most of his fingers. This patient could not move from place to place without a powered chair.
