Location – Emergency Department
Forty thousand people came to the emergency department at Eagle Ridge Hospital last year with medical concerns. Many complain of having symptoms of a cardiac event. These patients are diagnosed as quickly as possible because time is a critical factor in the case of heart attack.
Portable ultrasound is particularly useful in an emergency setting because it is light, self contained and easily transportable throughout the department including the waiting area if need be.
The use of ultrasound examinations to test the heart rhythm of a fetus has long been understood. Ultrasound, however, is a commonly used and invaluable diagnostic tool for conducting cardiac exams, and is especially useful to determine the extent and severity of a cardiac episode. The unit can also be used by emergency physicians to diagnose medical illnesses through ultrasound assessments for pleural, pericardial and peritoneal fluid, deep vein thrombosis and other indications.
A portable ultrasound has typically has a working life of five years, and Eagle Ridge urgently needs to replace an ultrasound this year.
