Why Give

Endoscopic Camera System for General Application

Location – Operation Room

Endoscopy is derived from Latin and means to look inside. At Eagle Ridge, our surgeons use endoscopes of various kinds to do that very thing, look inside the body for medical reasons such as diagnosis through observation and tissue removal and in some cases, surgical treatment. Unlike most other medical imaging devices like ultrasound, CAT scans and MRI’s, endoscopes enter the body through an orifice, pass through a passage way and enter an organ. The surgeon can use the monitor to view both the interior of the passage way and the inside of the organ itself, such as the lung, colon or bladder.

An endoscopic camera system consists of a rigid or flexible tube attached to a camera (1) at the proximal end of the tube (5), a light delivery system to illuminate the interior wall of the passage way and organ (5), a light source (3), a monitor (2) and an information management system (4) that captures and stores video images. The rigid or flexible tube houses a lens at its distal (end that enters body) end. A flexible tube contains light and image transmission capability using fiber optics and can also house a supplementary channel for attaching surgical tools and removing tissue.

Endoscopes are designed for specific functions and some of the more common types include bronchoscopes (trachea and lungs), colonoscopes (large intestine), cystoscopes (urinary tract) and laryngoscopes (throat and larynx). Another type of scope is used for closed body cavity surgery which includes laparoscopes for non-invasive abdominal surgery and arthroscopies for non-invasive joint surgery.

When I brought my son to Emergency, we were treated by the Emergency doctor, Peter, who is also the Interim Medical Director for the Hospital. We know Peter. Our sons play hockey together. He's a great guy, he's professional, personable, and it was reassuring to be treated by someone we know.
