A ceiling lift allows a single caregiver to perform transfers under handset control without stress or strain and with no manual lifting. It has clear benefits to the patient through ease of movement but the hidden benefit is to nursing staff and care givers. One of the most common occupational injuries suffered by nurses and care givers involves the lower back from lifting heavy loads. The ceiling lift is a godsend for these personnel.
Controls are easily accessible on the hand set or the front of the lift cassette. Features such a brake, manual lowering system and stopping device – safeguard the resident in the event of an emergency.
In a typical installation a length of track is installed over the bed or commode for transfers into and out of bed or on and off a commode and a second length of track is installed in the bathroom for transfers to and from the toilet, bathtub or shower chair. The patient can be transferred to their wheelchair or wheeled commode in their bedroom, the lift disconnected, the lift and patient wheeled to the bathroom, the lift connected to the bathroom track, and then the patient is transferred to the toilet or bath tub.
